This whole trip was organised quite spontaneously when I stumbled upon old ‘golden’ Vietnamese music from the American war in March 2022. I fell in love with what they could do with such a tonal language and how, after all these years and their own tribulations, the Vietnamese people appear to be super welcoming to outsiders. I reached out to my friend Toomas and after a week or so we had plane tickets booked for July.

I knew this was a rare opportunity for me (I’d never been outside Europe before) so I wanted to have something to take home with me; something to work on to solidify my experiences and memories and share them with others. For this trip, I wanted to try my hand at field recordings. Also, a week before departing, I caught wind of a special paper made only in Vietnam. This paper ‘dó’ (pronounce ‘zo’) is made in a mountainous area in the northwest of Hanoi, the capital and our destination. A convenient coincidence.
